In America buying a gun is as easy as buying candy, anyone can pretty much walk into a shop and get a gun if they so wish. Gun laws may vary depending on the state (in some states you do not even have to tell anyone that you own a gun) but every American has a right to buy and own a gun. With gun prices ranging between a little over $200 to a little over $500 and ammunition between $150 and $200. So far, in 2018 alone America has seen eight school shootings which resulted in death or injury and a total of 18 school shootings, even innocent children are targeted, in schools, where they should be safe. Federal law in America prohibits the carrying of a handgun or its ammunition by anyone under 18 years of age and at the same time has no age restrictions on possession of long guns or their ammunition. Licensed gun dealers are only allowed to sell to those 21 and older. Despite all this some states have their own regulations for guns – for example, in Minnesota you can sell a gun to a 14 year old without their parents’ approval. Some colleges even allow concealed guns as long as they have permits. In Michigan as long as you have completed an eight hour training course you can carry a gun in schools, day care centers, churches and hospitals, even stadiums.
Here in Ireland and the UK (as well as many other countries) gun laws are way stricter; in order to qualify for buying or possessing a firearm one has to get a permit/license before which rigorous background checks will be carried out to ensure that the person is emotionally and physically fit and that he/she is not putting their lives or the lives of others at risk.
On 14th February this year in Marjory Stoneman High School in Parkland, Florida seventeen people, including 14 schoolchildren, were killed when a gunman opened fire at the school. After this incident Donald Trump ordered a ban on bump stocks. What are these bump stocks? These are devices that can be attached to guns for modification that essentially make semi-automatic guns fire faster.like a fully automatic weapon and fire hundreds of rounds in a minute. Bump stocks were also used in the Las Vegas shooting where a gunman opened fire into a crowd a killed 58 people.
In concluding, America’s gun culture is a major cause for concern, many innocent lives are lost every year because of this. It is high time something is done about this, this is not good for American citizens and it is certainly not good for tourism as everyone wants to visit a place where they know they will be safe.
